SilverSneakers Information

SilverSneakers® is the nation's leading exercise program designed exclusively for older adults offering free physical activity, health, education, and social events for Medicare-eligible or group retiree plans.

The Salem Community Center (SCC) is proud to offer the SilverSneakers® Fitness Program to our community. We are approaching our 10th year of participating in this wonderful, free program.

SilverSneakers® is the nation’s leading exercise program designed exclusively for older adults. The program offers free physical activity, health education, and some social events for Medicare-eligible and Group Retiree members.

Some insurance carriers mail SilverSneakers® cards directly to those who are eligible, while others do not. If you have received a SilverSneakers® card in the mail, bring it to the Salem Community Center, 1098 N. Ellsworth Ave., Salem, Ohio, and we will enroll you into the program and get you started on your membership. If you have not received SilverSneakers® information in the mail, call (330-332-5885) or stop at the Salem Community Center and ask the Front Desk staff to check your eligibility.

What do SilverSneakers® members receive at the Salem Community Center? All SilverSneakers® members receive a regular individual membership plus the signature SilverSneakers® Fitness Program classes at no charge. Your SilverSneakers® membership also gives you admittance to any participating SilverSneakers® facility throughout the country.

Classes

SilverSneakers® exercise classes, SilverSneakers® Classic, SilverSneakers® Splash and SilverSneakers® CardioFit, are multi-level, equipment-based, total-body conditioning classes. The overall class objectives are to minimize age-related physical deterioration, improve health-related and skill-related physical fitness components to increase functional activities for daily living, and increase a person’s sense of well-being in a group exercise setting.

Goals of the classes are to improve overall fitness, promote health education, especially as it relates to health status issues, and encourage social interaction in a group setting. The focus of the classes is to increase muscular strength and endurance and range of motion, resulting in functional improvements in posture, balance, weight transfer activities, coordination, agility and body awareness. Your instructors receive training and follow-through offered by no other organization in the country. Older-adult instructor training courses, evaluations, continual feedback, and continuing education in older-adult fitness are standard in the curriculum.

The free SilverSneakers® classes all are 45 minutes long. Exercise classes are taught in informal groups of both men and women. Class descriptions include:

SilverSneakers® Classic: Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a SilverSneakers ball are offered for resistance. A chair is available if needed for seated or standing support.

SilverSneakers® CardioFit: SilverSneakers CardioFit is an advanced group exercise class designed for active adults who desire a safe and effective low-impact cardiovascular workout. Energizing and easy-to-follow movements promote heart-healthy, total-body conditioning to increase cardiovascular and muscular endurance. In addition, a variety of strength training options are offered to provide a well-rounded workout.

SilverSneakers® Splash: Activate your urge for variety! Splash offers fun, shallow-water movement to improve agility and flexibility while addressing cardiovascular, strength and endurance conditioning. No swimming ability is required, and a SilverSneakers kickboard or other aquatic equipment is used to improve strength, balance and coordination.

SilverSneakers members are not required to take the free classes, but you’ll miss out on a lot of fun! For non-SilverSneakers, the above classes are also part of the Salem Community Center class program and can be purchased. Stop in or call the Front Desk for pricing.

Not eligible for SilverSneakers®?

For seniors not eligible for the SilverSneakers program, the SCC offers a senior discount on memberships (day pass, monthly or annual). For instances where only one spouse is SilverSneakers eligible, we also offer a ½ price membership for the non-eligible spouse. Also, check with the Front Desk to see if you are eligible for a new senior program called Silver&Fit!

Many SCC seniors take advantage of our popular bus trips. In the past, we have gone to Mountaineer, Amish country, Wineries, Wheeling, Polka Fests, Cabela’s and even rides around Salem to view Christmas Lights. These day trips are low cost and always fun.

We also offer senior seminars led by local area businesses. Watch for flyers on our bulletin boards or this website for details!
